Interest in a light board usually dips about six weeks in, and the standard family response is to buy something. Another board, a bigger board, a themed edition, a bumper pack of designs. In almost every case the thing that has run out is not hardware but ideas, and the cure costs the price of a sheet of black paper.
What has actually happened
The child has completed the templates in the box. Each one was a task with a printed answer, and once the answers are used up there is nothing to do except repeat them. That is a content problem, and no additional plastic will solve it.
Why a second set is the wrong purchase
Two boards in a house of two children reduces arguments and that is a fair reason. Otherwise you are buying a duplicate light source, a duplicate housing and another tray of the same pegs, at full price, to fix a shortage of black sheets. If the two boards are different models the situation gets worse: pegs and templates may not interchange, so you now own two incompatible systems and a jar of mixed pegs.
Check compatibility before you buy anything
This is the single most common wasted purchase in this category. A refill pack bought for the wrong grid is money gone, because peg diameter and length vary between models and generations, and printed sheets are drawn for one specific hole layout. Confirm the model you own, then check what the pack is intended for: Lite-Brite lists the current boards alongside their refill packs, which is enough to avoid the mismatch.
Making your own designs, cheaply
- Squared paper and coloured pencils: one square per hole, colour it in, follow it on the board.
- Trace an existing sheet onto plain black paper to reuse a grid you already know fits.
- Print a photograph small, rule it into the right number of squares, and reduce it to four colours.
- Keep a folder of finished designs so a child can rebuild an old favourite.
- Swap designs with a friend who has a compatible board, which costs nothing at all.
What is genuinely worth buying
Pegs, in quantity, in the colours that always run out first, and plain sheets. That is the whole list for most families. Extra pegs remove the constraint that ends sessions early, and plain sheets remove the assumption that a picture has to match something printed.
The bigger board question
Grid area is the one specification that changes what is possible, so upgrading to a larger board is a defensible purchase for a child who has outgrown a small travel model and wants to attempt portraits or lettering. Do it because the work demands the space, not because interest has flagged. If the current board is being ignored, a larger one will be ignored in a bigger way.
